Test Run Of The Asics Gel Kayano 28 Shoes

As an avid disc golfer, I’m always on the lookout for gear that can improve my game. Shoes are an important but often overlooked piece of equipment. I recently got my hands on a pair of the new Asics Gel Kayano 28 running shoes and took them out on the course to see how they perform for disc golf.

First Impressions

Straight out of the box, the Kayano 28s felt incredibly comfortable. The upper is made of breathable mesh material that flexes nicely with the foot. ASICS uses a lightweight foam called FlyteFoam in the midsole, which gives these shoes a soft, bouncy feel. The famous Gel cushioning technology in the rearfoot also provides excellent shock absorption.

In terms of looks, I’m a fan of the simple black and white colorway. The Kayano 28 has a sleeker profile than previous versions, with a lower external heel counter. Overall, these shoes strike a nice balance between performance and aesthetics.

Putting Them to the Test

I took the Kayanos out for a full 18 hole round to see how they hold up. Right away, the grippy rubber outsole provided great traction on tee pads and for planting firmly during drives. The lugs aren’t overly aggressive, so I didn’t pick up tons of debris from the course.

The plush cushioning was noticeable, especially when walking long distances between holes. My feet felt fresh even after hours of play. The midsole foam also provided good stability during x-step approaches and follow throughs.

One of my favorite things was how the upper fabric kept my feet cool on a hot day. Unlike leather or plastic cleats, the mesh material is very breathable. Even when things got sweaty, my feet didn’t feel constricted.

By the end of the round, I was impressed by how the Kayanos performed. They provided support and comfort without sacrificing responsiveness or traction.

Comparison to Other Disc Golf Shoes

The Gel Kayano 28s have a lot of similarities to top disc golf shoes from brands like Adidas and Salomon. The main difference is they utilize ASICS’ proprietary midsole and rearfoot technologies to provide customized comfort and support.

In terms of feel, I’d compare the Kayanos most closely to the Salomon Speedcross trail running shoes. Both offer a plush ride and good grip. The Salomons have more aggressive tread which is better for courses with very rugged terrain.

When it comes to cleated golf shoes, the Kayanos provide more cushioning and flex. They aren’t waterproof like some models from Adidas and Keen. However, the mesh fabric dries quickly if they do get wet.

For a casual round, I personally prefer the athletic feel and breathability of the Gel Kayanos over waterproof cleats. They offer plenty of support and traction without sacrificing comfort.
