L.E.D Golf Discs

Are you a night owl? Do you come to life or have a work schedule that only allows you out at night? Disc Golf can be incredibly fun at night. Translucent/Glow discs and L.E.D. lights can see you through the darkest of nights, whether that’s on a partially lit course, a beach, a park or your backyard. They are also good if your evening on the course runs late and you need something to make your disc stand out against the fading light.

They are particularly good in wooded areas as not many courses or forests have all aeras covered with lights. Unless there’s a night time event on many courses close up around sunset.

 

Rechargeable Discs

Rechargeable LED golf discs have LED lights built into them. These lights can be turned on and off, and are powered by rechargeable batteries. The LED lights will make the disc more visible in low-light conditions, and can also add a fun element to the game of golf. They are typically used for night golfing.

There are several brands that make LED golf discs. Some examples include:

• Night Sports: Night Sports offers a variety of LED golf discs in different colors and designs.
• Lite Discs: Lite Discs makes a range of LED golf discs that are designed to be lightweight and easy to throw.
• Glo-Discs: Glo-Discs is another company that makes LED golf discs that are designed to be used in low-light conditions.
• Light Up Disc Golf: Light Up Disc Golf offers a variety of LED golf discs in different colors and designs.
• INNOVA: INNOVA is a well-known disc golf brand they have a few models of LED discs.

 

How Are L.E.D. Golf Discs Made?

LED golf discs are made using a process that combines molding and assembly. The process typically involves the following steps:

1. Design: The first step in making an LED golf disc is to design it. This involves creating a 3D model of the disc and deciding on the placement and type of LED lights to be used.
2. Molding: The next step is to create a mold of the disc. This is typically done using a machine that can create precise and detailed molds of the disc.
3. Injection Molding: After the mold is created, plastic is injected into the mold under high pressure to create the disc body.
4. Assembly: After the disc body is created, the LED lights are assembled and installed into the disc. This typically involves attaching the lights to a circuit board, and then installing the circuit board into the disc.
5. Testing: Before the disc is shipped, it is tested to ensure that the lights and the disc are working properly.
6. Packaging: The disc is packaged with all the necessary instructions and batteries for the lights.

It’s important to note that different manufacturers may use slightly different processes, but the overall process is similar.

 

Disc Construction

LED golf discs are typically made from a type of plastic called polyethylene, which is a common material used in the manufacturing of golf discs. Polyethylene is a durable and flexible material that can be easily molded into the shape of a golf disc. It is also relatively lightweight, which makes it ideal for use in a sport like disc golf.

The plastic used in LED golf discs can come in different variations like:

• High-Density Polyethylene (HDPE) is the most common plastic used in LED golf discs, it is known for its durability, flexibility, and low cost.
• Low-Density Polyethylene (LDPE) is a more flexible plastic that is less durable than HDPE but is more resistant to cracking.
• Proprietary blends, some manufacturers use their own blends of plastic that may include different types of polyethylene or other materials to get specific properties like more durability, grip or even different colors.

LEDs and circuit boards are also included in the disc construction.

It’s important to note that different manufacturers may use slightly different materials, but the overall construction is similar.

 

Glow Discs

Glow discs, also known as glow-in-the-dark disc golf discs, are typically made from a plastic material that is infused with a phosphorescent material. Phosphorescence is a type of photoluminescence, which is the ability of a material to emit light after being exposed to light.

The phosphorescent material used in glow discs absorbs light energy during the day and then emits it as a visible light in low-light conditions. This allows the disc to glow in the dark. Some glow discs are made from a blend of plastic materials that include the phosphorescent agent, while others use a clear plastic with a phosphorescent film applied to the surface.

 

An Alternative – Glow Disc Plastics

There are several brands and models of glow-in-the-dark disc golf discs available on the market. Some of the more popular brands and models include:

• Innova: Innova is one of the most well-known and respected disc golf brands, and they offer a wide variety of glow-in-the-dark discs, including the Starfire, the Orc, the Wraith, and the Leopard.
• Discraft: Another popular disc golf brand, Discraft offers a range of glow-in-the-dark discs, such as the Buzzz, the Comet, and the Nuke.
• MVP: MVP is a newer disc golf brand, but they have quickly made a name for themselves with their high-quality glow discs, such as the Anode, the Ion, and the Vector.
• Latitude 64: Latitude 64 is a well-known disc golf brand with a range of glow-in-the-dark discs like the Diamond, the Diamond-X, the Diamond-Lite, and the Diamond-Glow.
• Dynamic Discs: Dynamic Discs is a well-known brand that offers a variety of glow-in-the-dark discs, such as the Verdict, the Justice, the Suspect, and the Escape.

It’s worth noting that some of these models come in different plastic types and weight classes. Also, since the disc golf market is constantly evolving, new brands and models with new features and technologies will come out.

Basegrip Glow by Prodigy Discs

BaseGrip plastic has a super grippy texture to it that makes it easy to grip. You’ll probably not want to release it!  It hits the sweet spot between being stiff and being able to break in perfectly. BaseGrip plastic is a low-cost option that doesn’t surrender quality or performance in any kind of weather.

Diamond Glow (Gateway)

Diamond Glow is a long-lasting super-bright blend of strontium and performance-grade TPU plastic. It is one of the brightest plastics on the market. With exceptional grip and durability, these clear or translucent discs with light up the darkest nights.

Although there could be more to that translucent glow than meets the eye. Strontium is a radioactive substance, but more so if you inhale it. Most likely it would be more dangerous at the manufacturing facility. Still don’t think I would want this in my hand.

Alrighty, now you have no excuses not to play Disc Golf either during the day, or during the night. And btw having some night time discs works great when you want to have some fun with your buddies on the beach or at a backyard party with your own basket that stretches into the evening. Or why not grab a bag and some discs and head off camping or to a local park with a lot of trees in the evening? Just a thought.
